Commitment to Learning

Our Shared Responsibility

At Denbigh High School, our philosophy is simple but powerful: "High achievement for all is our shared responsibility." We believe that for students to reach their full potential, both teachers and students must be deeply committed to the process of learning. Our "Commitment to Learning" strategy is designed to ensure that every second in the classroom is used effectively, moving away from passive "listening" toward active, high-impact participation.

The Philosophy: Attention is the Gatekeeper

We recognise that attention is the first step to learning. If a student is not attending to the teacher or the task, they cannot process new information. Our strategy focuses on "norm alignment"—creating a consistent environment where high expectations for focus and behavior are the standard in every classroom. By reducing "lost learning" and student passivity, we create a space where every child can excel.

Our Learning Modes

To provide clarity and structure, we utilise three distinct "Learning Modes." These allow students to understand exactly what is expected of them at different stages of a lesson:

  • Respectful Whole Class: When the teacher is explaining new concepts or modeling work, we enter a state of total focus. Students are expected to listen actively, track the speaker, and remain ready to engage.
  • Independent Silent: Deep learning requires focus. During this mode, the classroom is a place of absolute silence, allowing students to think deeply, practice skills, and complete work without distraction.
  • Purposeful Talk: Learning is also social. In this mode, students are guided through structured academic discussions, such as "Turn and Talk," where they use subject-specific vocabulary to refine their understanding with peers.

The Power of SLANT

To support these learning modes, we use the SLANT routine. This is a simple but effective set of behaviours that helps students physically and mentally prepare for learning:

  • Sit up straight (to maintain focus).
  • Listen carefully.
  • Arms crossed (to minimize distractions from equipment).
  • Never interrupt.
  • Track the teacher or speaker.

By using the cue "3-2-1 SLANT," our teachers can quickly bring the class into a state of respectful attention, ensuring that no time is wasted and every student is ready to receive information.

Expert Pedagogy for Exceptional Outcomes

Our teachers are not just subject experts; they are trained in core pedagogical techniques to ensure no student is left behind. You may hear your child mention strategies such as:

  • Cold Call: Teachers call on students to answer questions regardless of whether their hands are up. This ensures everyone is thinking and ready to participate.
  • Mini Whiteboards: Used for quick checks of the whole class’s understanding, allowing the teacher to see immediately if anyone needs extra help.
  • Choral Response: Where the whole class repeats a key definition or quote together to build confidence and "stickability" of knowledge.

Working Together

Our Commitment to Learning strategy is about more than just rules; it is about building a culture of automaticity and excellence. When these routines become habits, the cognitive load on students is reduced, allowing them to focus entirely on their academic work.

We thank our parents for their continued support in reinforcing these high standards, ensuring that Denbigh remains a place where "high achievement for all" is a daily reality.
