Preparing Students for Life in Modern Britain

Denbigh High School aims to prepare students for life in modern Britain by delivering a comprehensive and ambitious academic curriculum that fosters a profound sense of inclusion and belonging. We provide students with the digital and emotional literacy required to safeguard themselves against the threats of modern life—including online misinformation, radicalisation, and harms. By instilling values that promote an appreciation of living in a diverse and democratic society, we ensure students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and character to pursue a successful life as informed, global citizens.

Religious Education and Worldviews

We deliver a tailored Religion and Worldviews curriculum that fulfils statutory requirements at Key Stage 3 by reflecting the main religious and non-religious traditions of Great Britain [Section 375(3) of the Education Act 1996]. Our curriculum covers the beliefs and practices of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism, alongside non-religious worldviews such as Humanism.

All aspects of the KS3 national curriculum in citizenship are integrated into RE lessons and form time activities. We teach students how to thrive in a respectful, tolerant, and multi-faith society, covering ethical topics relevant to the lived experiences of young people in our community. All students follow a GCSE course in which they study Christianity and Islam in greater depth, exploring spiritual, philosophical, and moral dilemmas while situating their own beliefs within the context of modern British society.

Collective Worship and Assemblies

The school holds a Determination (an exemption from the requirement to hold collective worship of a Christian character). In its place, each year group participates in a weekly assembly based on a moral, spiritual, or citizenship theme. These sessions are designed to be inclusive, objective, and pluralistic, ensuring they are appropriate for all students regardless of their religious or non-religious background.

Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Development (SMSC)

SMSC development is at the heart of the curriculum at Denbigh High School and is a primary indicator of our commitment to high-quality inclusion. The SMSC curriculum provides varied opportunities for students to develop into well-rounded, prosocial citizens. It prepares students for life in modern Britain by embedding the fundamental values of mutual tolerance, respect, democracy, the rule of law, and individual liberty.

Through our SMSC curriculum, we empower students to:

  • Spiritual: Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings, and values; use imagination and creativity to reflect on their place in the world.
  • Moral: Recognise right and wrong; understand the consequences of actions; and critically investigate moral and ethical issues where opinions differ.
  • Social: Appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate in democratic processes; and engage with others through a lens of individual liberty and mutual respect.
  • Cultural: Celebrate diversity; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; and participate in activities that build cultural capital.

Delivery and Integration

The SMSC curriculum is delivered through a robust pastoral programme of form time activities, routine assemblies, and our House system. It is further enhanced by student voice initiatives, digital leader programmes, and a full extra-curricular calendar. SMSC is threaded throughout the academic curriculum, with all subject areas identifying opportunities to develop students' understanding of complex spiritual, moral, social, and cultural issues in an ever-changing world.
